Step 1: Photo Eyes — the Reason a Garage Door Won't Close Most Often

Federal safety requirements have put a pair of photo eyes on every residential opener sold since the early 1990s. They sit low on each side of the opening, roughly four to six inches off the slab, and they project an infrared beam across the doorway. Break that beam while the door is closing and the opener reverses immediately. Break it before the door starts and the opener refuses to close at all — most units signal this by flashing the overhead light or clicking without moving.

Check them in this order. Look for physical obstructions first: a recycling bin, a coiled hose, a surfboard leaned against the jamb. Then look at the LEDs. Nearly every brand lights one steadily on the sending unit and one on the receiving unit; a receiver LED that is dark, dim, or flickering means the beam is not landing. Newer units use programming buttons and a learn sequence, and the procedure differs by manufacturer; the label on the motor head or the inside of the light lens usually gives it. Force settings are separate controls and should be adjusted only after travel is correct, because raising force to mask a binding door defeats the entire reversing safety system.

Step 3: When a Garage Door Won't Close for Mechanical Reasons

Now disconnect the opener with the red release cord and move the door by hand with the opener idle. A healthy door glides through its full travel with moderate effort and stays put when you stop it around waist height. If it grinds, catches at a specific point, or slams down when released, the problem was never electronic.
